Traffic Safety Program
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety Traffic Safety Program (NMDPS TSP) is administered by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) through the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This program provides funding for all twelve (12) New Mexico State Police Uniform/District Offices throughout the state. The NMDPS receives this annual funding to ensure safer highways for the motoring public by assuming a leadership role and providing coordination of accident reduction initiatives. Generated statistical data dictates and drives the funding amounts and location of serious traffic safety matters that exist throughout all counties in the State of New Mexico. An example of NMDOT funded operations are as follows; sobriety checkpoints through ENDWI operations; directed patrols; occupant protection activities through the Buckle Up and Click It or Ticket enforcement; High Visibility Patrols through STEP operations and DWI Enforcement through Summer Activity enforcement. Additionally, Education and Enforcement funding is provided to the NMSP for the purpose of continued training and certification, purchase of vital equipment and enhance the strategies behind current and future traffic safety initiatives.
The NMDPS TSP is designed to make driving in New Mexico safer by reducing traffic-related deaths and injuries through the various statewide enforcement operations. Each NMSP district is tasked with identifying and actively working in high-crash areas using statewide campaigns to address specific issues. There is an emphasis on enforcement of driving laws and on educating drivers of all ages on the risks of distracted driving, driving without a seatbelt, and driving while under the influence.
