High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Program
The New Mexico High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program is administered the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The program consists of 17 HIDTA designated counties working together to coordinate drug intelligence, interdiction, investigation, and prosecution efforts to reduce the impact of illicit drugs in New Mexico, along the southwest border, and throughout the United States.
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety (NMDPS) is a participating member of New Mexico HIDTA. As a participating agency, NMDPS utilizes funding to support the interdiction and investigative efforts of the New Mexico State Police, Region III Narcotics Task Force and the Forensic Laboratory’s supportive forensic services for drug analyses on suspected controlled substances that are seized throughout the HIDTA areas of New Mexico. In addition, the laboratory in Santa Fe provides latent print processing and comparisons on controlled substance cases as requested by HIDTA initiatives. These services directly impact the investigation and prosecution of multi-state and local drug trafficking as New Mexico is a prime trans-shipment corridor for illicit drug trafficking with its transportation infrastructure and 180 miles of international border with Mexico.
