Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program
The Edward Byrne Justice Assistance (JAG) Program is administered by the U.S Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance. This program’s objective is to provide state agencies and units of local government with the resources necessary to supplement funding in support of criminal justice activities by combating illicit drug issues and violent crime within eligible program purpose areas.
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety (NMDPS) is the State Administering Agency for the JAG program. Over the last ten years, NMDPS has established solid partnerships with the law enforcement agencies throughout the state to maintain a stable source of JAG funding for the law enforcement agencies throughout the State. The State’s Annual JAG Strategic Plan provides a yearly blueprint for JAG activities, to include the development of program goals, strategic action planning and the measurement of program outcomes. It is through our State’s JAG funding, that law enforcement agencies throughout the New Mexico can adequately provide necessary and meaningful law enforcement activities aimed at reducing, drug, and violent crime, in their respective communities.
In the State of New Mexico, the New Mexico Drug Enforcement Advisory Council (DEAC), established by Executive Order 96-14, is responsible for the direct oversight of the JAG program funding and provides policy guidance concerning illegal drug issues and violent crime within the state. This governing board is comprised of state, local, and federal officials, and public community members.
