Grants, NM – On February 17, 2023, at around 9:45 a.m., the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal crash involving four vehicles on Interstate 40 near mile marker 85 in Grants, NM.
The initial investigation indicated that a 2015 Volvo Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), driven by a 26-year-old male, was traveling east on Interstate 40 near mile marker 85. For reasons still under investigation, the Volvo semi-truck rear-ended a 2021 Freightliner CMV that was also driving east on Interstate 40. The Volvo CMV then crossed into the median and struck a 2005 International CMV and a 2009 Cadillac that was traveling west on Interstate 40. The passenger of the Volvo CMV, Adrian Leyva (22) of Illinois suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
The driver of the Volvo CMV, the driver of the International CMV, and both occupants of the Cadillac were transported to a local hospital for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. The driver and passenger of the Freightliner did not sustain any injuries in the crash.
This crash is being investigated by the New Mexico State Police with assistance from the crash reconstruction unit.
