Taos, NM -On Wednesday, October 5, at the request of the Taos Police Department, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called to investigate an apparent homicide at 307 La Luz Drive in Taos.

 

State Police Investigations Bureau agents learned that on October 5, at around 5:00 a.m., a nineteen-year-old male with apparent gunshot injuries knocked on the door of a neighboring house and told the residents that he and his mother had just been shot.  The neighbor called 911.

 

The Taos Police Department was dispatched, and officers from the New Mexico State Police were called to assist.  When officers arrived, they found Shirley Reyes, 52, deceased inside the home.

 

As ambulances responded to the scene, officers spoke with the nineteen-year-old victim who identified the suspects as Javier Romero, 16, and Elijah Hamilton, 14, both of Taos.  Through investigation, agents learned that a third teen, Rickey Fresquez, 14, of Taos was also involved.

 

The nineteen-year-old victim was transported to an area hospital. The extent of his injuries and current condition is not known.

 

On October 5, at around 11:26 a.m., Elijah Hamilton was brought to the NMSP office in Taos by his parents.  At around 1:40 p.m. on the same date, Javier Romero was located by officers. On October 7, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Rickey Fresquez was brought to the NMSP office in Taos by a family member.

 

All were booked into a juvenile detention center and charged with:

 

  • Murder in the first degree (open charge)
  • Conspiracy
  • Aggravated Burglary with a Deadly Weapon
  • Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon
  • Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon

 

This case is under investigation by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau
