Santa Fe, NM – On March 7, 2022, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was contacted to investigate a homicide that had occurred at the intersection of Saint Michaels Drive and Cerrillos Road.
Investigations Bureau agents learned that on March 7, 2022, at around 5:00 p.m., Karl Rougemont, 31, of Santa Fe was driving a black Dodge Charger, and Christopher Vigil, 40, of Santa Fe was driving a gold Chevy Blazer. Both drivers were traveling westbound on Saint Michaels drive.
For reasons still under investigation, the two men stopped and got out of their vehicles at Saint Michaels Drive and Cerrillos Road. A physical altercation ensued between the two Santa Fe men. At some point during the encounter, Rougemont presented a firearm and discharged it at least once towards Vigil. Vigil was struck at least once from gunfire.
Santa Fe County deputies arrived and detained Rougemont, and State Police officers began rendering medical aid to Vigil until paramedics arrived. Vigil was transported to a local hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
Rougemont was arrested and booked into the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Center. He was charged with an open count of Murder in the First Degree, Negligent use of a Deadly Weapon, and Unlawful Carrying of a Deadly Weapon.
New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agents are working to determine the series of events that led up to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the district attorney for their review and consideration. This incident remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
