State Police investigate crash involving a school bus in Roosevelt County.
Roosevelt County, NM – A school bus carrying children gets into an accident with a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV).
On January 25, 2023, around 7:30 am, the New Mexico State Police was requested by the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a crash involving a Portales school bus and a tractor trailer at the intersection of State Road 236 and Roosevelt Road T.
The initial investigation indicated the school bus was traveling south on Roosevelt Road T. For reasons still under investigation, the school bus failed to yield at the intersection and was struck by a tractor-trailer carrying a full load of corn traveling west on State Road 236. The school bus was carrying about 17 students with ages raging between 6 and 15 years old.
Six students, along with the 61-year-old male bus driver and the 28-year-old male tractor-trailer driver were transported to an area hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Their current conditions are not known. One student was transported to an area hospital with severe injuries and was later airlifted to a Texas hospital. Their condition is not known.
This crash remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police with assistance from the Crash Reconstruction Team.
