Dona Ana County, NM – On May 7, 2021, at approximately 5:11 p.m., the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal crash involving two-vehicles on US 70 and Picacho Hills Road, in Dona Ana County.

The initial investigation indicates a 2009 white Chevrolet pick-up truck, driven by Donald Haynie (66) of Las Cruces, NM was travelling west US 70. For unknown reasons, the Chevrolet rear ended a 2019 Peterbilt (CMV) that was stopped at a red light at the intersection of US 70 and Picacho Hills Road. Haynie sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.

Driver inattention appears to be a contributing factor in the crash. Alcohol does appear to be involved and seatbelts were not properly used. The driver of the CMV was uninjured. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash. The name of the CMV driver will not be released by State Police. No additional information is available.
