Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act Program
The Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (LEMHWA) Program is administered by the U.S Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. This program will develop knowledge; increase awareness of effective mental health and wellness strategies; increase the skills and abilities of law enforcement; and increase the number of law enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders using peer support, training, family resources, suicide prevention, and other promising practices for wellness programs. The LEMHWA program focuses on improving the delivery of and access to mental health and wellness services for law enforcement through training and technical assistance, demonstration projects, and implementation of promising practices related to peer mentoring mental health and wellness programs.
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety (NMDPS) utilizes LEMHWA funding to provide access to mental health services and wellness training to New Mexico State Police (NMSP) officers through the NMSP CARE program. The purpose of the NMSP CARE program is to ensure NMSP officers are provided with the best officer wellness and mental health services that can be offered to them and to ensure that the best and most comprehensive mental health services are afforded to the citizens of New Mexico. To deliver appropriate referrals for these services, the NMSP must first ensure that their own staff are mentally equipped to handle the stressors and mental trauma associated with protecting and serving the people and communities in the State of New Mexico. The primary goals of the NMSP CARE program are to: 1) Create a mental health wellness and officer safety program that can be shared with other local law enforcement agencies; and 2) Provide comprehensive officer peer support services for a broad range of stressors and activities in support of overall officer wellness and resiliency; and 3) Implement promising officer peer mentor practices that are quality-driven and evidence-based.
